73 Miners Killed in South Sudan Gold Mine Attack

In one of the deadliest single attacks in the country’s recent history, at least 73 people were killed and 25 seriously injured when unidentified assailants stormed a gold mine in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State. The assault occurred over the weekend in Khor-Kaltan, roughly 70 kilometers southwest of the capital Juba. Vice President James Wani Igga confirmed the toll and called for an urgent investigation, saying: “Your grief is the nation’s grief. We stand with you in this dark hour.” The identities and motives of the attackers remain unknown, underscoring the chronic insecurity that plagues resource-rich regions of the young nation.
