The Iran War: A Ceasefire on the Brink

The fragile truce between the United States and Iran — which had largely halted fighting in the Persian Gulf for more than a month — now appears to be collapsing. On Monday, President Donald Trump publicly slammed Tehran’s latest peace counteroffer as “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,” declaring that the ceasefire was on “massive life support.”

Iran’s proposal reportedly included demands for the release of frozen assets and an end to the US naval blockade. Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, insisted the United States would pursue “complete victory” over Iran and maintained that Tehran could not be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon — though he offered no details on the next steps in negotiations.

The president’s hardline posture immediately sent oil prices soaring and dashed hopes that a deal could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping — a chokepoint critical to global energy markets.
