In what is being described as one of the worst recreational diving disasters in recent memory, five Italian divers were killed after becoming trapped in a sea cave at a depth of approximately 50 metres in the Maldives. A high-risk search-and-recovery operation to retrieve the bodies was launched but had to be suspended due to rough seas. Details about the circumstances of the entrapment remain scarce, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
