EU Bans Airlines from Charging Parents to Sit with Children

The European Union reached a landmark agreement on passenger rights reform: airlines will be prohibited from charging parents extra to sit next to their children under 14. The measure, part of a broader reform package, survived months of tense negotiations. A separate push to ban charges for cabin baggage was dropped, replaced by a requirement that ticket-selling websites display prices inclusive of hand luggage. Plans to reduce airline compensation for cancellations and long delays were also shelved after strong resistance from European Parliament members. “We have defended” passengers’ rights, diplomats said.
