Meta Sued Over AI-Driven Layoffs Targeting Workers on Leave

In a case that could set precedent for how companies use artificial intelligence in workforce decisions, dozens of former Meta employees have filed a federal lawsuit alleging the company used AI tools to flag workers for mass layoffs. The suit, filed in the Northern District of California, claims Meta’s “constellation of internal artificial intelligence systems” — including AI performance ratings and keystroke-monitoring tools — disproportionately targeted employees who had taken maternity leave, disability leave, or requested other protected accommodations. The layoffs in question were part of Meta’s reduction of approximately 8,000 employees earlier this year. The case raises urgent questions about algorithmic bias in human resources at a moment when AI adoption in corporate decision-making is accelerating worldwide.
