Sydney Moves to Ban Black Roofs and Mandate Climate Resilience
New South Wales is preparing a significant overhaul of its planning laws that could spell the end of the black roof — a suburban staple that traps heat and worsens urban temperatures. Under the proposed changes, developers would be required to demonstrate how new housing projects can withstand future climate risks. The move comes as Melbourne’s inner north is also bracing for transformation, with final maps for 25 “activity centres” set to allow towers of up to 20 storeys, as the state pushes to increase housing density.
