Israeli Attacks in Lebanon Threaten Peace Process

Recent Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the ongoing Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are actively endangering the fragile framework for peace negotiations, according to reporting by El País. Hezbollah supporters took to the streets in Beirut on Friday to protest against the Lebanese government, illustrating the volatile political dynamics that surround any attempt at de-escalation.

Six months after a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the situation in Gaza remains dire. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the continuing killings of Palestinians, describing an “incessant pattern of deaths” that reflects “a persistent disregard for Palestinian lives, facilitated by widespread impunity.” Türk added that no survival plan exists for the territory, regardless of where people seek refuge.

Meanwhile, Der Spiegel reported that Trump’s promised Gaza peace council is already faltering — several Gulf states that were supposed to provide financial backing have apparently failed to deliver the pledged funds, casting doubt on the viability of the US administration’s peace architecture.
