France’s Ministry of Health estimated roughly 1,000 additional deaths over just three days as extreme heat gripped the country, according to reports from both international and Brazilian media.
The devastation is not confined to France. Temperature records toppled across several countries over the weekend as the heat wave crept eastward. In Greece, reports described traffic lights warping, asphalt buckling, and citizens frying eggs on the pavement — surreal images that capture the severity of the crisis. Germany, which also saw record temperatures, was then hit by a dramatic weather reversal: violent thunderstorms with thousands of lightning strikes and storm-force gusts swept across the country, adding chaos to an already dangerous situation.
The heat wave underscores what climate scientists have warned about for years — that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more lethal. With summer only just underway, the toll may continue to rise.
