In the turquoise waters just minutes from the Maldivian capital of Malé, one of the world’s most ambitious architectural and environmental projects is taking shape. The so-called “Maldives Floating City” is designed to house up to 20,000 residents across more than 5,000 floating homes, complete with schools, restaurants, and shops — all spread over approximately 200 hectares.
The project is framed as an innovative response to the existential threat of rising sea levels, which imperil the low-lying island nation. It aims to serve as a model of sustainable urban development, proving that cities can adapt to climate change rather than simply retreat from it.
