A Historic First in European Basketball

In a story that broke through the grim news cycle, Greek outlet Ta Nea reported that Kalia Papadopoulou has become the first woman head coach to win a title with a men’s basketball team in Europe. Coaching AEL in the Cyprus Cup final, Papadopoulou led her side to an 81–79 victory over Keravnos at the Tassos Papadopoulos-Eleftheria arena. Her team held a 36–27 halftime lead and weathered a second-half rally to clinch the trophy — AEL’s first title in 17 years and the club’s 10th cup overall. It was a milestone that resonated well beyond Cypriot sport.
