Andy Burnham: Britain’s Incoming Prime Minister

Andy Burnham was confirmed as the new leader of the Labour Party on Thursday, meaning he will become prime minister on Monday. In his first remarks as leader, Burnham pledged to end the factional infighting that has plagued Labour in recent years and laid out a distinctly left-leaning vision for Britain.

He promised to undo the legacy of Thatcherism, expand public ownership of utilities, fix the social care system, and build a new generation of council homes. “This government has a ‘last chance’ to get it right,” he declared.

However, anxiety persists on the left of the party about his expected choice of Shabana Mahmood as chancellor, a pick that some worry could temper his more ambitious economic promises.
