The Brussels region announced that rental electric scooters will be banned starting in 2027, citing serious safety concerns. Regional leader Boris Dilliès said that frequent accidents and associated problems have led the city to “turn the page.” The licences of current operators Bolt and Dott expire at the end of 2026 and will not be renewed, though the city’s bicycle rental system will continue.
Both companies condemned the decision. The ACV-CSC trade union called it “barbaric,” warning of consequences for workers. Brussels follows Paris, Madrid, and Prague in restricting or banning shared e-scooter services — a trend driven by a mounting toll of injuries and complaints about reckless riding and cluttered sidewalks.
