Europe Moves Toward a Digital Euro

The European Parliament voted decisively — 416 in favor, 169 against, with 22 abstentions — to authorize negotiations with the EU Council on launching a digital euro. The initiative aims to offer citizens a secure digital payment method while reducing dependence on non-EU payment providers. Political groups from the right, including Patriots for Europe and the Europe of Sovereign Nations bloc, had challenged the move, but they were comfortably outvoted. If negotiations succeed, the digital euro could fundamentally reshape how hundreds of millions of Europeans handle everyday transactions.
