Greece endured punishing temperatures on Sunday, with the mercury hitting 39.2°C in the city of Karditsa according to the national weather service Meteo. Across the country, 81% of active weather stations recorded temperatures above 30°C, with 18% exceeding 35°C.
The heat brought tangible danger. A fire broke out at the old Badminton building in Athens’ Goudi Park, prompting authorities to send an emergency alert to residents via Greece’s 112 system. Twenty-eight firefighters with nine vehicles responded. In Thessaloniki, authorities imposed a 24-hour ban on all access to the Seich Sou forest and surrounding woodland areas starting Monday morning, citing high wildfire risk (Category 4).
Adding insult to the heat, beachgoers in Attica discovered that a day at an organised beach can now cost up to €100, with entry fees of €8–12 per person and sunbed-and-umbrella sets running between €15 and €40 — prices many Greeks say are beyond the means of ordinary households.
