India Test-Fires Advanced Agni Missile with Multiple Payloads

India conducted a flight trial of an advanced variant of its Agni ballistic missile on May 9, in what defence officials described as a significant step in the country’s strategic capabilities. The missile was tested with multiple payloads targeted at different locations “spatially distributed over a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region,” according to The Hindu.

The test underscores India’s continued investment in its nuclear-capable missile arsenal and its pursuit of more sophisticated delivery systems. The Agni series — the backbone of India’s land-based nuclear deterrent — has undergone several iterations, and this latest trial appears aimed at demonstrating a capacity for multiple independently targetable re-entry capabilities, though officials did not use that specific terminology.
