Mystery Kamikaze Drone Washes Up in Greek Waters

Greek military specialists are investigating a seaborne kamikaze drone that was discovered near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. Analysis of the drone’s GPS system has revealed its full trajectory — and according to reports, it was likely deployed from a cargo ship into the Ionian. Its suspected mission: surveillance and possible destruction of vessels belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” the network of tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions on Russian oil.

Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled detonation of part of the drone’s 300-kilogram explosive payload near the coastal town of Astakos. Greek authorities say diplomatic steps will follow once the technical investigation is complete — a sensitive matter given the geopolitical tensions surrounding both the Ukraine war and Mediterranean shipping routes.
