The drumbeat of war between the United States and Iran grew louder this week as President Donald Trump issued fresh, incendiary threats aimed at Tehran. In posts on social media, Trump declared that “Iran’s largest bridge has collapsed and will never be used again. Much more will follow!” He demanded that Iran strike a deal “before it is too late,” warning that nothing would be left standing.
The rhetoric was met with defiance. According to reports from Costa Rica’s La Nación and Spain’s El País, new explosions rocked Iran on Thursday following Trump’s threats of “massive bombings” lasting two to three more weeks. The Iranian military responded by promising “devastating” attacks against both the United States and Israel “until their humiliation, dishonour, permanent and certain repentance, and surrender.”
Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported repelling missiles fired from Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah during Passover. The conflict, now stretching past a month, has left thousands dead across the region. Greek outlet Ethnos also reported Trump’s ultimatum to Tehran, characterising the situation as one of escalating brinkmanship with no clear diplomatic off-ramp in sight.
