Several other significant developments competed for attention on June 9:

Pakistan cracks down on human smuggling. The Federal Investigation Agency told a parliamentary committee that it has disciplined over 100 officials for collusion with human smuggling networks since the 2023 Greece boat tragedy, in which at least 209 people drowned. Some 22,136 passengers were offloaded in 2026 alone under stricter profiling mechanisms.

Flotilla activists detained in Libya. A scheduled court hearing for 13 detained humanitarian volunteers — including two Italians — was postponed in Libya, sparking hunger strikes and protests outside Libyan embassies in 13 countries. The mission’s spokesperson expressed concern that the delay could lead to extended detention.

Palestinian detainee abuse allegations. Former Palestinian detainees described systematic torture and sexual violence — including rape — during their detention by the Israeli military, according to Greek outlet Ethnos. The accounts included the alleged use of dogs in assaults.

AI’s thirst for water. Roughly two-thirds of data centers currently being planned in the United States will be built in some of the country’s driest regions, raising alarms about the technology industry’s growing water consumption at a time of increasing drought.

Paramount pledges editorial independence. New Paramount CEO David Ellison told 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl that he would respect the iconic news program’s editorial decisions, following what was described as “a tumultuous stretch” for the show.
