Pakistan’s Judiciary Embraces AI — With Guardrails

Pakistan’s National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) issued formal guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in courts across the country, in what the Supreme Court called “a landmark step toward modernising the judiciary.” The framework positions AI as an assistive tool to help judges manage crushing caseloads while explicitly preserving human judgment, constitutional safeguards, and judicial independence.

The guidelines, approved during the NJPMC’s 57th meeting, reflect a growing global trend of legal systems grappling with how to harness AI’s efficiency without sacrificing due process. At a time when courts worldwide face backlogs measured in years, Pakistan’s proactive approach — setting clear principles before widespread adoption — could serve as a model for other developing nations.
