Peru’s Runoff Election: Sánchez and Fujimori in a Dead Heat

Peru’s presidential runoff between Roberto Sánchez and Keiko Fujimori is shaping up to be one of the closest elections in the country’s modern history. According to El País, Sánchez held a narrow lead over Fujimori in the official count as of June 8, but Mexican media described the race as a “technical tie” — a characterization echoed by multiple outlets.

The contest has not been without controversy. In Arequipa, a party representative was detained for allegedly stealing 261 voting ballots, raising concerns about electoral integrity in a race where every vote matters. Meanwhile, fact-checkers at La República were quick to debunk viral claims that Sánchez had already been officially declared president, calling the assertion outright false.

The tight margin means Peru could be in for days — possibly weeks — of counting, legal challenges, and political tension before a winner is confirmed.
