In one of the day’s most dramatic and developing stories, witnesses in Beijing reported that a small aircraft appeared to crash into the Citic Tower, the Chinese capital’s tallest building at 528 meters. A witness captured video from a nearby building showing fire trucks spraying water on large columns of smoke billowing from the tower, which is located in Beijing’s eastern business district near the headquarters of Chinese state television.
AFP journalists on the scene observed a breach in the windows on one of the upper floors, and images showed what appeared to be wreckage of a small plane at the base of the skyscraper. Police and ambulances were deployed in large numbers to the area. Details remain scarce, and authorities had not yet issued an official statement as the story developed.
