Southampton Expelled From Playoff Final for Spying

In what may be the most explosive English football scandal in years, Southampton has been kicked out of the Championship playoff final and docked four points after being found guilty of spying on Middlesbrough and other opponents. An independent disciplinary commission imposed the punishment after the English Football League charged Southampton with “multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training.”

The club admitted to the breaches, which involved more than one opposing team. Middlesbrough has been reinstated and will now face Hull City in the playoff final — a match worth hundreds of millions in Premier League revenue. The scandal has sent shockwaves through English football, raising questions about how long the practice went undetected and whether other clubs might face scrutiny.
