The Israel-Iran conflict’s economic fallout was front and center as G7 agriculture ministers convened on Monday to address a brewing fertilizer crisis. France’s Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard, hosting the emergency session, warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has blocked nearly one-third of global urea exports — a critical input for food production worldwide.
“Today I convened the agriculture ministers of the G7 to debate a strategic issue: the security of fertilizer supply, on which our collective ability to feed the world depends,” Genevard said, framing the issue as a priority ahead of the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian next week.
Separately, The Hindu reported that 24 Indian sailors were rescued from a ship struck by a U.S. missile after the tanker — previously sanctioned for carrying Iranian oil — allegedly violated the ongoing naval blockade by attempting to sail to an Iranian port. The sailors were expected to reach India within two days.
