The US Senate passed legislation early Friday to fund Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement apparatus, voting 52-47 to approve the $70 billion package. The bill funds Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and border patrol operations for the next three years, through the end of Trump’s term.
The legislation’s passage came after weeks of delays and fierce partisan backlash, partly triggered by an unrelated $1.776 billion settlement fund that threatened to derail the entire effort. Democrats had blocked the funding for months. The bill now heads to the US House of Representatives, which is expected to take it up next week.
