The targeted ship, the Hasna, was rendered unable to navigate — a dramatic escalation in the ongoing U.S. campaign to choke off Iranian oil exports.
The strike is the latest and most visible act in what has become a full-scale naval blockade of Iranian shipping. According to the New York Times, Iran is now running out of storage capacity for its unsold crude, with facilities on Kharg Island — the country’s main oil export terminal — nearing their limits. The blockade, initiated in the context of the broader war with Iran, is systematically dismantling Tehran’s primary source of revenue.
Iran’s response has been defiant. Officials accused the United States of seeking to “destroy the cohesion of the country in order to force us to surrender,” while adding that Tehran has not yet delivered its formal response to a U.S. 14-point proposal — reportedly being mediated through Pakistan.
