In a telling diplomatic move, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Beijing for meetings with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. The stated goal: securing China’s support for a “new post-war regional framework” in West Asia.
The timing is significant. Araghchi’s one-day trip comes just a week before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing for a summit with President Xi Jinping on May 14–15. Iran appears to be lobbying China before America gets the chance to press its own case in person — a sign of just how critical Beijing’s stance has become to both sides.
