The already fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran came under severe strain this weekend after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made explosive claims about Washington’s posture toward Tehran. In an excerpt from a CBS 60 Minutes interview published ahead of broadcast, Netanyahu declared that the war with Iran “is not over” as long as the country retains its stockpile of highly enriched uranium (HEU).
“It’s not over, because there’s still nuclear material — enriched uranium — that has to be taken out of Iran. There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled,” Netanyahu said, adding that Trump wants to “go in” to Iran to secure the material.
Iran said it had responded to a U.S. peace proposal, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Markets reacted swiftly: oil prices rose and stock futures ticked down as investors absorbed the news that prospects for a U.S.-Iran peace deal had effectively fizzled — for now.
