Earthquakes Rattle Northern Euboea, Greece

Three successive earthquakes struck northern Euboea on Sunday afternoon, the strongest measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, sending residents into the streets in panic and causing damage across the region. The first tremor registered 4.8, with an epicenter six kilometers south of Prokopi, followed rapidly by two more quakes in the same seismic zone.

Dramatic video footage showed a man running in terror as screams echoed in the background. At one local church, a baptism ceremony was interrupted as the building sustained damage. An abandoned building also collapsed, though no injuries were reported from any of the three tremors. The quakes were felt across a wide radius, including in Athens.

Georgios Kaviris, Professor of Seismology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Director of the university’s Seismology Laboratory, moved quickly to reassure the public. He clarified that the two main events were separate seismic occurrences and said the known fault lines in the area are unlikely to produce anything significantly larger. Still, authorities mobilized rapidly to conduct inspections, and the seismic activity kept residents on edge throughout the afternoon.
