The AI Wars Intensify — in Courtrooms and Boardrooms

The battle for the future of artificial intelligence is being waged on two fronts. Commercially, the rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic — the company founded by former OpenAI researcher Dario Amodei, who helped develop the core technology behind ChatGPT — has escalated into what The Hindu described as a “bitter battle.” The stakes, the report notes, extend far beyond the personal rivalry between Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman; they concern the very trajectory of AI development and safety.

Meanwhile, OpenAI faces a deeply personal legal challenge: a Canadian mother has filed a lawsuit alleging that interactions with ChatGPT contributed to her daughter’s death. OpenAI called the situation “heartbreaking” and noted that the version of ChatGPT the girl had used is no longer available. The case will almost certainly intensify the growing debate over AI safety guardrails and corporate responsibility.
