Trump’s 80th Birthday: An Iran Deal and a Cage Fight

The peace announcement landed just hours before what may be one of the most surreal events in White House history: UFC Freedom 250, a seven-fight mixed martial arts card staged on the South Lawn to celebrate Trump’s 80th birthday.

The juxtaposition was not lost on observers. As the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age noted, Trump “hailed an agreement to end the conflict in Iran hours before a celebration on the storied South Lawn that once would have seemed unfathomable.”

The Guardian reported that the UFC event was accompanied by million-dollar donor dinners, seven-figure hospitality packages, and a guest list that doubled as a roster of Trump’s political and business network. Columnist Sidney Blumenthal argued the event had become “a nexus of political fundraising, corporate influence and presidential branding.” The UFC also announced it would begin paying fighters in cryptocurrency from a Trump-affiliated company.
