In what is being called a significant defeat for Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, the US Supreme Court voted 6-3 to strike down the president’s executive order challenging jus soli — the constitutional principle granting citizenship to anyone born on American soil. The order, signed shortly after Trump began his second term, sought to strip birthright citizenship from children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States.
The ruling reaffirms the 14th Amendment’s guarantee: if you are born in America, you are an American citizen. As the website Axios noted, however, the decision gives opponents of Trump’s immigration policies only a partial victory, suggesting the broader legal and political battle over immigration is far from settled.
