Bastille Day: Macron’s Final Parade and a Fire Near Knossos

July 14 brought spectacular scenes from Paris, where President Emmanuel Macron presided over what is expected to be his last Bastille Day military parade as head of state. World leaders were in attendance, including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The grand procession down the Champs-Élysées featured the full pomp of the French military tradition.

Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, alarms sounded near the ancient archaeological site of Knossos in Crete, where a fire broke out reportedly triggered by an electrical cable. Firefighting units were rapidly deployed, and early reports suggest the blaze was contained before threatening the Minoan ruins — a UNESCO-recognized treasure.
