Cuba Announces Unprecedented Economic Reforms

In what may be the most consequential story outside the sporting world, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero presented an ambitious package of 176 reform proposals to the country’s parliament — described as the most sweeping market-oriented economic overhaul in the island’s modern history.

The proposals span nearly every sector of the economy: the organization of private and state-owned enterprises, banking, tourism, agriculture, foreign investment, taxation, wages, and currency exchange. Marrero himself acknowledged the program as “the deepest economic reform ever announced” in Cuba. The reforms come as the communist nation grapples with a profound economic crisis and mounting pressure from Washington. Deputies in the National Assembly are expected to debate and vote on the measures.
