Fighter Jet Down, Diplomacy Dead

The past 48 hours have marked a sharp and dangerous escalation in the US-Iran war. Iran shot down a US fighter jet over the Gulf, with only one crew member rescued so far. Iran’s parliamentary Speaker publicly mocked the American search effort — a rhetorical flourish that underscored just how far the two sides have moved from anything resembling a negotiating table.

Simultaneously, Iran formally notified mediators that it has no intention of meeting with American officials, effectively killing any near-term prospect of a ceasefire. The refusal was unambiguous: Tehran told intermediaries it “does not intend” to have its officials sit down with their US counterparts. Whatever diplomatic channel remained open after weeks of aerial bombardment now appears to have snapped shut.
