Meanwhile in Australia: Elections, Apologies, and Sporting Heartbreak

South Australia’s state election provided its own drama. Former Liberal leader David Speirs publicly apologised for the impact his personal scandals have had on the party, while One Nation leader Pauline Hanson warned that her party’s strong performance in the election was “just the beginning.”

On the sporting front, Australian fans were left with a familiar ache. The Matildas, Australia’s beloved women’s football team, failed to win the Asian Cup on home soil — the second consecutive home tournament without a trophy, following the 2023 World Cup. “We’re just going to have to remember these Matildas as one of the best teams never to win something,” lamented the Sydney Morning Herald. In rugby, the Waratahs managed to blow at least ten scoring opportunities against the Blues in what was described as an exercise in “ever more inventive” self-defeat.
