Relations between Poland and Ukraine, already strained, have taken another hit. Polish officials from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party are urging the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia to rename a street honoring Stepan Bandera, the wartime nationalist leader whose movement was responsible for the massacre of more than 100,000 Poles during World War II. The dispute escalated after Zelensky named a military commando unit after the “Heroes of the UPA,” the armed wing of Bandera’s organization, in late May. Council members in the Polish city of Kielce have now formally requested Vinnytsia remove Bandera’s name.
