Press Freedom Under Siege From Guatemala to India

While Washington debated the politics of a shooting at a journalists’ gala, reporters in other parts of the world faced far starker dangers.

In Guatemala, indigenous journalist Carlos Cal, 45, was shot dead Sunday night on a street in San Cristóbal Verapaz, about 80 kilometers north of the capital. He was hit by five bullets, according to police reports. The Association of Journalists and Social Communicators of Alta Verapaz said the killing “adds to a panorama” of “aggressions” and “intimidation” against journalists in the region. Cal practiced journalism primarily on social media.

In India’s Punjab state, journalists complained of systematic censorship by the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) government. The Press Di Azaadi Bahal Karo Sangharsh Committee accused the state of using copyright strikes and IT Rules takedown notices to silence media voices — a subtler but no less effective form of suppression.
