Turkey Tightens the Vise on Opposition Mayors

The Turkish Interior Ministry’s approval of an investigation into Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş on allegations of misusing public funds fits a now-familiar pattern. As Ta Nea reported, the move follows the arrests and dismissals of mayors backed by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Bursa and Uşak. In Bursa’s case, the ruling coalition managed to install a successor through its majority on the municipal council. Analysts see a deliberate strategy of applying dilemma-style pressure on opposition-held municipalities — either forcing compliance or creating pretexts for removal.
