U.S. EPA Takes Aim at Microplastics in Drinking Water

In a move with potentially far-reaching implications for public health, U.S. agencies announced plans to begin monitoring drinking water for microplastics and pharmaceuticals. The Environmental Protection Agency will include these contaminants on the sixth Contaminant Candidate List, triggering mandatory testing and monitoring under the Safe Drinking Water Act and opening the door to dedicated research funding.

The decision marks a significant regulatory shift. While concerns about microplastics in water have been growing for years, formal inclusion in the monitoring framework brings the issue squarely into the regulatory mainstream — and could eventually lead to enforceable limits on these ubiquitous pollutants.
