US Launches New Wave of Strikes on Iran as Diplomacy Falters

The already volatile Middle East ignited again over the weekend as the United States carried out a new wave of airstrikes against military targets in Iran late on Sunday evening. According to the US Department of Defense, the strikes targeted military installations, border outposts, and an oil platform near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global energy supplies.

Tehran’s response was swift and defiant. Iranian officials declared that the attacks render diplomacy “futile,” a sharp rhetorical escalation that dims hopes for any near-term negotiated off-ramp. Iran has also sought to establish a permanent fee-collection system for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and has warned ships not to sail without its authorisation — a move that, if enforced, would amount to a de facto toll on roughly a fifth of global oil traffic.

The strikes had immediate wider regional consequences. Qatar, which has previously said it would not serve as a mediator while it was under attack, reported that three people — including a child — were injured by falling shrapnel, and said Iran was “fully legally responsible.” An Iranian social media post captured the mood in Tehran: “The era of one-sided deals is OVER. We told you: keep your word or pay the price.”

Oil prices jumped sharply on the news, reflecting market fears that sustained conflict near the strait could disrupt crude shipments at a time when global energy markets remain tight.
