Vijay’s Historic Swearing-In Electrifies Tamil Nadu

In one of the most dramatic political transitions in recent Indian history, C. Joseph Vijay — one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars — was officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, 2026. As he began uttering the oath, “C. Joseph Vijay ennum naan…,” the crowd at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium erupted in celebration, with whistles filling the air in what The Hindu described as “a sense of political arrival.”

In a break from tradition, Vijay chose to address a massive gathering of supporters at the stadium immediately after the ceremony rather than delivering his first remarks from a more formal government setting. His maiden speech laid out the priorities of his new government: transparency, women’s safety, and — pointedly — “no power centres,” signaling a desire to break from the patronage networks that have long characterized Tamil Nadu politics.

His cabinet reflects a deliberate diversity. According to The Hindu’s reporting, the new TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) government includes veteran politicians, former IAS officers, social media personalities, and first-time MLAs. Kerala’s outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was among the first to offer congratulations, expressing hope that “the trust the people of Tamil Nadu have reposed in Vijay will translate into a government that upholds the values of social justice, secularism and people’s welfare.”

The actor’s path from screen idol to statehouse is a familiar one in Tamil Nadu — the state has previously been led by film legends M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa — but Vijay’s rise marks a generational shift in the state’s politics.
