Voting Rights Under Fire: Supreme Court Rules, Florida Redraws Map

The U.S. Supreme Court rolled back a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in a ruling that The New York Times editorial board called nakedly partisan. The opinion column argued that “in the name of disentangling race from politics, the court has given white voters more power at the expense of racial minorities.”

The timing was no coincidence. On the same day, Florida’s legislature approved a new congressional map designed to maximize Republican advantages ahead of the 2026 midterms. Governor Ron DeSantis had unveiled the proposal just two days earlier. The Guardian reported that the Supreme Court’s decision could make it significantly harder for Democrats to challenge redistricting efforts that dilute the influence of voters of color — a one-two punch that could reshape the electoral landscape for years to come.
