Witnesses Contradict Official Account of Fatal ICE Shooting in Texas

One of the week’s most contentious stories unfolded in Houston, Texas, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an enforcement operation. The Trump administration claimed Salgado Araujo had “weaponized” his vehicle against ICE agents.

But the three men who were riding in the van at the time are strongly disputing that narrative, according to their lawyer and lawmakers who have spoken to them. The witnesses told their attorney that the driver never drove the vehicle toward an ICE official and that no agent was ever positioned in front of the van. Adding another layer of concern, the men — who were arrested during the incident — are reportedly being pressured to sign self-deportation orders. Footage of the shooting is said to be in the hands of investigators, though it has not been made public.
