Music Industry Unveils AI Content Labeling System

In a move that could reshape how listeners engage with AI-generated music, major industry organizations including the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Grammys, and SAG-AFTRA jointly unveiled a voluntary labeling system on Friday. The new classification is designed to make it immediately clear to audiences when and how generative artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of music content.

“Fans want to know if generative AI has been used and in what way,” the heads of the IFPI and RIAA said in a joint statement. “These labels will offer a transparency approach that is immediately comprehensible and easily scalable.” The organizations are pushing for widespread adoption across streaming platforms and labels, though the system remains voluntary for now.
