A Deadly Wildfire Ravages Southern Spain

A forest fire near Los Gallardos in Almería, Spain, has killed at least 12 people, with 23 others still unaccounted for. Preliminary investigations point to a downed electrical cable near Almocaizar, along the N-340a highway, as the likely cause. From there, the blaze reportedly spread north and northeast toward the municipality of Bédar — a rugged, sparsely populated area of isolated homes inhabited largely by foreign residents. The terrain has made rescue and containment operations extraordinarily difficult.
