For the first time in Colombia’s democratic history, a candidate running explicitly against the political establishment has won the presidency. Lawyer Abelardo De la Espriella — nicknamed “El Tigre” — captured more than 12.9 million votes, narrowly defeating leftist candidate Iván Cepeda by a margin of less than one percent.
The razor-thin result exposes a deeply divided nation. De la Espriella capitalized on widespread opposition to the outgoing government of Gustavo Petro, whose left-wing administration had come to power four years earlier in its own pendular swing. Marketing experts have called De la Espriella’s campaign a case study in political branding, harnessing anti-establishment sentiment into electoral victory.
According to Carta Capital‘s analysis of overseas Colombian voters, De la Espriella won in seven of the nine South American countries where Colombians cast ballots. Cepeda, the leftist candidate, was the top vote-getter only in Brazil and Argentina — a detail that underscores the ideological fault lines now running through the continent.
