Denmark’s Frederiksen Resigns as Coalition Talks Begin

Across Europe, Denmark entered a period of political transition after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen formally submitted her government’s resignation following a close-fought election. Her outgoing three-party coalition failed to secure enough mandates to continue governing.

Frederiksen told supporters she was “ready to take on the responsibility” of leading the country for the next four years, signaling her intention to remain central to coalition negotiations. She struck a sobering tone, noting that “the world is not waiting for us out there and it has only become more unsettled since the election was called” — an apparent reference to the cascading global crises, from the Middle East to transatlantic tensions.

Frederiksen is expected to remain as caretaker prime minister while talks proceed.
