European airports are warning that jet fuel shortages could severely disrupt the summer holiday season unless oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are restored within three weeks. The Airports Council International (ACI) Europe sent an urgent letter to EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, laying out a stark scenario: the continent is just weeks away from serious fuel shortfalls that could trigger widespread flight cancellations.
The crisis stems from Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly a fifth of the world’s hydrocarbon trade flows — as retaliation against the US and Israeli military campaign against it. Oil prices have surged since early March, hammering one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints and sending shockwaves through global supply chains.
A parallel warning came from Greek media, which reported on the same ACI letter, underscoring that the threat extends to airports across the EU. If the blockade persists, the peak summer travel season could face unprecedented disruption.
