Eurovision Boycotts Spread Across Europe

In a striking act of cultural protest, national broadcasters in Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia announced they will not air the Eurovision Song Contest this year, boycotting the event over Israel’s continued participation. Slovenia’s RTV went furthest: not only will it refuse to broadcast the world’s largest live music event, it will fill the airtime with a series of films about Palestine.

The move represents a significant escalation in the cultural fallout from the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, turning what was once an apolitical celebration of pop music into a geopolitical flashpoint. Eurovision has faced growing pressure from activists and some member states, but a three-country broadcasting blackout is unprecedented in the contest’s seven-decade history.
