Greece finds itself in an uncomfortable diplomatic position after its armed forces officially concluded that an explosive-laden sea drone discovered near the island of Lefkada belongs to Ukraine. Greek military teams traced the device using GPS data and serial numbers, and a full software analysis is expected to be completed by the end of the week, at which point an official report will be forwarded to the Foreign Ministry for formal diplomatic action.
The discovery has already triggered political fallout in Athens. SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos confronted the government in parliament, asking pointed questions: “Why wasn’t this breach detected? Why was it found by fishermen and not the Navy or the Coast Guard?” Defense Minister Nikos Dendias reportedly raised the matter during an EU defense ministers’ meeting that included Ukraine’s defense minister via videoconference.
The incident highlights the uncomfortable reality that the war in Ukraine continues to send ripples — sometimes literal ones — far beyond the frontlines.
